Belief and Weight Loss

Belief is key to everything we do.  If I didn’t believe I could build this spiral house I wouldn’t even have tried.

In the book ” The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, one of the key elements that is important in changing a habit, such as the way one eats, is belief that change is possible.  I can see how that is true.  Nothing is done that is done without belief that it is possible.  A baby would not walk unless he believed walking was possible for him.

The author goes on to say that one of the keys to change for people in Alcoholics Anonymous is belief.  Belief in a higher power and belief that it is possible to make a change.

Believing in my ability to lose weight had never been a problem before.  I have lost weight many times, especially after having a baby and needing to lose the lbs. I had put on while pregnant.  Lately, however, my belief had been faltering as I found myself giving up every day about 5 pm and deciding I didn’t care.  However, in the last few days, learning about habits and how they work, and deciding to change my reactions to the triggers, has bolstered my belief in my ability to lose weight this time.

In the book “The Power of Habit”, the belief that change is possible often took some time for the people in the stories shared.  Then at a tipping point, when the people began to see that the change was real, the belief soared and everything fell into place.  Like a chain reaction, other things fell into place to support the change as well.

For me, changing the habit of eating while watching TV has also caused other changes to naturally occur.  My sister Cheryl and I decided to make some healthy treats that will not only boost our energy, but also be better for us than the milk chocolate and sugary treats we had been eating.  Last night Cheryl and I made “zoom balls” from a recipe in Rosemary Gladstar’s book “Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health” and put our new treats in the refrigerator ready to reach for at the right moment.  Due to this preparation, today as I ran errands, I did not reach for other treats at the store to tide me over.  I know I have zoom balls waiting for me at home, and my belief in this process has helped me wait.

Once I got home I ate my meal and did not need the zoom balls.  Interesting.

I will post about my experiment with zoom balls and weight loss again as I use them.  If anyone has tried zoom balls before I would love to hear from you about your experience.  I will say the recipe called for a lot of nutmeg and in the future I may not use so much.  We toned ours down with more tahini butter and coconut and honey.

The Medical Medium Diet : Vacation Over . . . Damage Report!

Yesterday morning I weighed 166 pounds, a gain of 6 pounds.  Not bad considering I ate what everyone else was eating, especially ice cream and candy.  However, as soon as I went off my diet, I could feel the difference.  I didn’t feel as good.  Did I stop indulging?  No.  I ate like everyone else.  I relaxed and enjoyed myself with the family and had fun, knowing I would be getting back to my healthy diet eventually.  After all, it is a life style change, not a diet, right?

Yesterday was the first day I was able to stick to the diet . . . I mean life style change . . . after several days of false starts.  I’m not mad at myself for any of the false starts.  Being angry with myself would be counter productive.  Health guru David Wolfe wrote in one of his books (and I am paraphrasing extremely) that if a person decides to indulge in a treat, they would be better off simply enjoying the indulgence without judgement rather than beating themselves up about it, which would cause stress and negative energy, and could possibly be worse for the person than the treat itself.

For me, false starts are an OK way of easing into something.  Typically false starts happen when I am not prepared.  Having the right food prepared ahead of time makes the transition from regular food to a special diet much more doable.  When I don’t have my diet friendly substantial foods ready to eat when I get hungry, after the celery juice and fruits of the morning, I feel tired and don’t want to prepare anything, so I eat whatever I can get my hands on, and chalk up another false start.  That’s OK for a little while but then I gear up and prepare for success.

The substantial food I depend on I like to call “candy”.  My “candy” is a mix of nuts and seeds, powdered greens, dried fruit, coconut oil, and honey.  Once I had prepared my health food “candy” ahead of time I was successful.  Along with the fresh fruits and veggies for eating, juicing, and salads, I had my sweet and yummy “candy”.  This “candy” is a great energy food.

My “candy” is very similar to energy balls that herbalist Rosemary Gladstar describes in her book “Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health”.  I took the idea and plugged in the foods from the Medical Medium diet, and voila’, “candy” that tastes good and is good for me too.  I reach for this “candy” when I would ordinarily reach for a sandwich or cereal.  I eat my “candy” instead of a meal.

Today’s “candy” was made from a mix of 1 c. chopped Brazil nuts, 1/2 c. shredded coconut, 1/2 c. sesame seeds, 1/2 c. ground hemp seeds, 1/2 c. dried cranberries, 1 c. prunes, 3/4 c. dried figs, 1/4 c. coconut oil, 1/8 c. spirulina, 1/8 c. chlorella, 1/8 c. cinnamon, enough honey to get it all sticking together, and a little bit of salt. A food processor chops everything up nice and fine and rolls it together as it gets sticky.  When the consistency is sticky enough, sort of like thick cookie dough, the mix can be rolled into little balls and put into the refrigerator to harden a bit.  Before refrigerating, the balls can be rolled in sesame seeds, coconut, chocolate powder, or other fine ingredient that keeps your fingers from getting sticky or oily when you pick them up to eat them (if that is important to you).  The “candy” ingredients can be changed to include whatever works for you on your own personal diet and according to your preferences.

Each ball is a bite sized morsel, easy to pick up and eat.  I don’t think I would be as successful in this life style change without them.
